Early this year, 21 people became ill with trichinellosis in both Spain and Sweden. This was traced to consumption of home-made wild boar sausage from an original source in Spain.

An outbreak of measles is ongoing in northern Serbia. The first cases were in January 2007 in the area of Novi Sad in the autonomous province of Vojvodina. As of 12 March 2007, 121 suspected cases had been reported to the regional Institute of Public Health.

For the past seven years (1999 to 2006), the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (EARSS) has collected antimicrobial susceptibility test results of invasive isolates in humans of seven bacterial species that serve as indicators for the development of antimicrobial resistance in Europe.

Since the first report of pediatric deaths in 1997-1999 in the United States, community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) has become an increasingly important public health problem worldwide.

On 28 November 2006, a patient in Norway was diagnosed with Salmonella Typhimurium infection. He contacted the district food safety office in Trondheim as he suspected the source to be Spanish-produced cured sausages he had bought on a ferry between Kiel, Germany and Oslo, Norway in October 2006.
